Trainer Mike Moroney will accept for Octavia in the Fillies and Mares Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday rather than the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).
Octavia was nominated for both races yesterday but Moroney made the decision to bypass the final Group race of the 2012/2013 racing season after the Holy Roman Emperor filly was allocated only 54kg for the handicap race.
The Bletchingly Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions and Octavia would have been forced to carry 56kg against her older rivals.
Moroney believes Octavia would still have been competitive in the Bletchingly Stakes but is a strong winning chance in the race against her own sex later in the day.
“She is pretty close to some of those horses in the Bletchingly but she is very well off in the other race,” Moroney told Sky Racing.
“She has been in good form and only narrowly beaten in her last two starts.”
Octavia has been desperately unlucky not to record a win this campaign after finishing second behind She Can Skate in the Simpson Construction Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley on June 29 and runner-up to Vicario in the Yarra Valley Farms Plate (1200m) at Caulfield on July 13.
The rising four-year-old is likely to face the worst track of her career on Saturday with the Caulfield track expected to be rated in the heavy range as rain is forecast in Melbourne for most of the week.
Although the Fillies and Mare Handicap is a considerably easier assignment than the Bletchingly Stakes, it is no easy kill with Serene Star, Ladys Angel, Elite Elle, Vicario and Kneeling all nominated for the event.
