Coffs Harbour Cup 2013 Target for Single Spirit

Single Spirit is on track for a shot at the 2013 Coffs Harbour Cup next month following their decisive win at the same track over the weekend.

The Ross Stitt-trained Not A Single Doubt three-year-old posted their fifth career win at start number 12 when taking out the $25,000 Coffs 2013 Sawtell Cup (1516m) in the mud at Coffs Harbour on Sunday.

It was a runaway win from the Taree-based gelding who relished their outside barrier 14 draw to put two and a half lengths on the Trevor Hardy-trained local veteran Save A Buck with Geronimo Jack a close third.

Stitt is now eyeing the $80,000 Carlton Mid Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) for Single Spirit next race on August 1 as he and jockey Robert Thompson continue a sensational season.

The duo combined only 10 days before Single Spirit’s win to take out the lucrative $150,00 Ramornie Handicap at Grafton with Youthful Jack and are keen for another out-of-town feature at the start of next month.

It should suit progressive galloper Single Spirit going back up to the mile for the Coffs Harbour Cup as well after they ran a close second to Kurtley in the Grafton Guineas over the 1600m at the start of the month in their first look at the distance.

Stitt stipulated that for Single Spirit to earn their start in the Coffs Harbour Cup they must win the traditional lead-up race, the Sawtell Cup, and he was thrilled they lived up to expectations.

“The plan has always been to progress to the Coffs Harbour Cup and then the Taree Cup,” Stitt said on Sunday.

“He’s still probably six months away from being fully developed but he’s got a brilliant turn of foot and a huge stride.”

Their home town cup and grand final assignment, the $60,000 Taree Cup (200m), is then due to run on Sunday August 18.

More big wins for the galloper would be a great result for Stitt who paid $55,000 for them as a yearling at the 2011 William Inglis and Son Scone Select Sales, Single Spirit now having won a shade over $86,000 in prize money.
