Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday punters can catch a glimpse of some of the very early spring hopefuls with Group racing returning to Caulfield Racecourse for the Bletchingly Stakes 2013, nominations for which are now out.
There are officially 15 entries for this year’s edition of the $150,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m), the top-rated runner being the Clinton McDonald-trained Second Effort.
The Mossman six-year-old, a Group 2 winner at the track in last August’s P.B. Lawrence Stakes in the mud, resumed on July 13 with a brave first-up third in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) and will appreciate going up to the 1200m this weekend.
Second Effort will also be looking to turn the tables on their last start conqueror with Monash Stakes winner Pago Rock another Bletchingly Stakes nominee.
David Hayes’ Rock Of Gibraltar five-year-old has won three from four this time in including their last two on the trot over the 1100m, their only defeat being a 1200m Flemington race where they were hampered by a wide draw.
Also coming via the Monash Stakes, the traditional Bletchingly Stakes lead-up, are runner-up Elite Elle from the local stables of Tony Vasil and rising 11-year-old Stanzout (4th).
Cranbourne-based grey Stanzout returned to racing off a seven and a half month spell with their nice Monash Stakes effort, the veteran grey looking to finish better than their ninth in the Bletchingly last year.
While Pago Rock looks the best of the last start winners there are three other entries coming off a victory with the Dale Short-trained Academy Jack, Captain Fancypantz and the Peter Moody-trained Kneeling.
Like Pago Rock Encosta De Lago mare Kneeling is also vying for their third win on the trot after a big Doomben win two back and a tight effort over 1300m in the wet at the Sunshine Coast on June 29.
She’s had a month between runs and returns here looking to hand Moody with his second Bletchingly Stakes trophy in as many years following his success with Ready To Rip 12 months ago.
Moody meanwhile has also nominated for Mr Make Believe out to improve on two distant finishes when dead last in the Slickpix Handicap at Moonee Valley and the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final at Flemington.
Other notable hopefuls then include Peter Snowden’s Lonhro gelding Launay, Octavia and last year’s Bletchingly Stakes runner-up Zamorar.
See below for the full 2013 Bletchingly Stakes nominations with the final field and barrier draw due out on Wednesday.
