Winter Stakes 2013 Tips & Betting Selections

This weekend the feature race across the country is Sydney’s 2013 Winter Stakes at Rosehill Gardens, the Races.com.au team’s insider betting tips for which are detailed below.

Under The Sun

The $100,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) features a full field this year and is shaping up as a crack showdown between some of the best end of season gallopers.

Race favourite in the latest markets at $4 is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Under The Sun who gets in on 54.5kg and whose gate two draw looks ideal with the firming track at Rosehill.

A four-year-old son of No Excuse Needed Under The Sun won at Randwick over the 1400m two back and is out to turn the tables on veteran runner Mic Mac who got the better of them by a length last start in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) here.

Paul Messara’s rising eight-year-old Mic Mac posted their first win in four years in the Civic Stakes carrying 59kg to Under The Sun’s 54kg and has another tough task on the weekend.

They go up to 60.5kg for the Winter Stakes which is a hefty weight and one that has Messara, but seemingly not the bookies, worried about the $4.80 second favourite.

So are these top two the ones to back in your Winter Stakes Quinealla bets?

Or is there more value looking outside the dominant duo with other single figure fancies including market mover Bold Glance ($7) and the Chris Waller-trained Coup Ay Tee ($8) with genuine claims at the title?

1st

#9 Under The Sun ($4)

Going to stick with the favourite here and believe they’ll get the black type after coming close in the Civic Stakes. They meet Mic Mac again but it’s hard to ignore the older horse’s 60.5kg. Under The Sun meanwhile has a very manageable 54.5kg so like their sire’s name, there’s no excuse (needed). Can handle a bit of give out of the ground so track conditions should suit and the distance is also ideal. Likes Rosehill and while strike rate isn’t great think this is their time from a gun draw.

2nd

#4 Kontiki Park ($10)

One of the three Waterhouse-trained hopes in the mix and think they’ll get the right kind of run trailing their well fancied stablemate Under The Sun. Were an improved fourth in the Natski last start after some really average performances over the past six months or so. That was carrying 60kg too so back to 57.5kg on a firmer ground with Hugh Bowman aboard – lots to like.

3rd

#5 Bold Glance ($7)

Are the market mover and we can see why with improvement to come after their last start third over the 1500m at this track in the Natski Handicap. Will also benefit from having the in-form Nash Rawiller jump on. Are a rising eight-year-old but still racing with a bit of spring in their step and will appreciate a firmer track than the Heavy (9) from last start. Need to rise again as they go up a little in the weights but think they’re right to do that.
