The in-form Mick Price has uncovered his second potential Caulfield Guineas 2013 star in as many days with the impressive debut of Lord Sherwood at Cranbourne on Thursday following that of Longma at Werribee on Wednesday.
Sebring colt Longma enjoyed an all-too-easy eight length victory in the Ballarat Gold Rush Plate in the mud yesterday earning talks about a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign targeting the $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12.
Today Price’s possible Caulfield Guineas contingent grew by one thanks to a smart winning effort by Encosta De Lago two-year-old Lord Sherwood in the $175,000 De Bortoli Wines Plate (1200m).
Ridden by Stephen Baster Lord Sherwood hit the front early and kept a strong pace through until the end of the juvenile’s maiden where they had a length to spare over the John Sadler-trained Export Quality.
It was the perfect career start for a horse Price has long had a nice opinion of and the kind of kick-off he believes will see them go all the way to the Caulfield Guineas via the traditional lead-up races including the $220,000 Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 7.
“He can have a little break now and (he’ll make a) nice spring colt,” Price said post-win.
“Those races that lead into the Caulfield Guineas are usually all 1200 metres, so he’ll go into a 1200, up in class and come back off the speed a little bit.
“But 1400, 1600 (will be) beautiful. He’ll be a lovely 1600-metre horse.”
The 2013 Danehill Stakes is also the likely next-up target for Longma, a wonderfully bred half-brother of last year’s Coolmore Classic winner Ofcourseican as well as Group 1 South African galloper Gimmethegreenlight, who Price is also spruiking as a future Group winner this season.
Their Werribee win also saw his sire, 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring, move up into equal first spot with Northern Meteor for the title of top Australian first-season sire with 16 individual winners each.
While futures Caulfield Guineas betting markets are still months off, Price’s runners are sure to feature strongly in them.
