Northpace Heads 2013 Belmont Classic Field

The Perth autumn festival continues at Belmont Park on Saturday with the Belmont Classic 2013 where last start Dayana Plate winner Northpace heads a smart field of stayers.

Jumping as Race 7 at 4:02pm (local time) this year’s $80,000 Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) has drawn a baker’s dozen of acceptors with 13 hopefuls to line-up in the WA feature.

The top-rated runner in the set weights clash and likely favourite is Fred Kerlsey’s flying Cape North three-year-old Northpace having just their sixth career start.

Of their five runs to date the gelding has enjoyed three victories and two minor placings including their third to Summah’s Touch in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) two back.

Last start they scored their best win yet when getting home three and a half lengths clear of their stablemate Go Tiger having crossed from the far outside barrier in the $50,000 Dayana Plate (2000m), also run at Belmont.

This weekend top WA hoop Steven Parnham has picked up the plum ride on Northpace in the Belmont Classic, the duo to jump from gate five, replacing their last start jockey William Pike.

Ascot-based horseman Kersley looks to have a very strong hand in the race too having also accepted for his Dayana Plate runner-up Go Tiger (barrier three) and Credo (barrier eight).

Well-tried Scandal Keeper grey Credo is another last start winner at the track having narrowly hang on on July 3 to win over 2100m by a nose ahead of He’s Henry.

Along with Kerlsey’s two there is one other last start winner in the mix with Adam Durrant’s class filly Summah’s Touch.

Drawn to perfection in barrier two with apprentice hoop Ben Paterson retaining the ride, the daughter of Blackfriars is after her third win on the trot to retain her undefeated this time in.

After a first-up victory in the Belmont Guineas the WA Oaks runner-up backed up a fortnight later to score another impressive Listed triumph this time beating home Elle On Friar by two lengths in the Belmont Oaks (2000m).

Belmont Oaks second placegetter Elle On Friar also backs up in the Belmont Classic this weekend coming up trumps with the inside alley.

Also coming via the Oaks are third placed Fashion Princess (barrier nine) who won over 1700m here before her brave run from gate 14 of 14 on July 6, and the Lou Luciania-trained Pants On Friar (fourth) who has gate 12 to overcome on Saturday.

Other notable hopes in the Belmont Classic field 2013 then include Dayana Plate third placegetter Trade Down and progressive Saxon gelding Nunca Te Rindas, formerly prepared by Fred Kersley but now with the Baldivis-based Kristian Hawkins.
