The Hawkesbury Race Club announced today that the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) will be moved from Melbourne Cup week to Thursday August 22.
The race was traditionally run on the same day as the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington but from this year onwards it will be held at the end of August.
The Hawkesbury Race Club made the decision to move the race as they believed it was being overshadowed by the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and an August date will make it a better lead-up race for the other major country cups in New South Wales.
The Hawkesbury Gold Cup will now be held just over a fortnight before the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) that will take place on Friday September 6 and a month before the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) on Thursday September 19.
The Group 3 has been won by a number of talented gallopers in recent years with Darci Be Good, Somepin Anypin, Thankgodyou’rehere, Nuclear Sky and Huge Demand all gracing the honor roll.
