2013 Villiers Stakes Target for Loaded Tattersall’s Mile Winner

Loaded will head towards the Villiers Stakes 2013 in Sydney at the end of the year after the Gosford-based galloper showed their class with a black type win in the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Doomben on the weekend.

Grant Allard’s in-form Flying Nicko five-year-old posted their third straight win for the winter on Saturday, backing up from a three length effort over 1500m at Eagle Farm just seven days earlier to win the Tattersall’s Mile by one and three quarter lengths.

Ridden to perfection by Timothy Bell, Loaded ($3.10) ran away to beat home two double figure roughies with the Liam Birchley-trained Easy Rocking eight-year-old Pepperwood ($41) nudging out John Sargent’s European import Boogie Shoes ($31) for second.

Race favourite was Lucky Hussler ($2.60), second in the Sunshine Coast Guineas the start before, who could only manage to finish just under four lengths away fifth after being badly blocked with 350 metres left to travel.

It was the luckless favourite Bell followed up through the field with Loaded who got exactly the right kind of run to win.

“I wanted Lucky Hussler to be on my inside coming to the turn because I wanted to be in a position where I was dictating to him and that’s how it panned out,” Bell said.

“He tries his guts out this horse and I was pretty confident I had them covered when he was travelling so easily on the home turn.”

The Tattersall’s Mile was Loaded’s maiden black type assignment and the ease of the victory proved to Allard they were worthy of stepping up to Group company next prep.

“Last week at Eagle Farm was the race we targeted him for and to win at Listed level seven days later is something special,” Allard said on Saturday.

“I’ve got a really good opinion of this horse. He’s definitely going places.”

Originally Allard was going to turn Loaded out after their Eagle Farm success the weekend before but the horse has an obvious affinity with Queensland and the decision to stay on for one more race certainly paid off.

“This race was worth $51,500 to the winner so it was nothing to be sneezed at and when they’re fit and happy like he is you know they’re going to be competitive,” Allard said.

Allard now plans to take them back home to Sydney for the spring – summer season naming the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday December 21 as their long range aim.

“Something like the Villiers would be on the radar because he’s got an excellent record at the mile and should get into it reasonably well at the weights because he’s still on the way up,” he said.

“Then there are other races up here like the Bernborough Handicap during the summer which would suit him.”

The lucrative $200,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m) runs at Doomben the weekend after the Villiers.
