2013 Crisp Steeplechase Results – Bashboy Extends Winning Streak

Australia’s leading steeplechaser Bashboy has extended his winning streak over jumps to six races in a row with his comfortable victory in the Crisp Steeplechase (3900m) at Sandown on Saturday.

Jockey Steven Pateman rode Bashboy just off the pace and the nine-year-old raced away when asked for an extra effort just after the penultimate jump to score a three and a half-length victory from early leader Cats Fun and Kirribilli Gold.

The win was Bashboy’s second straight Crisp Steeplechase triumph and according to Pateman has him primed for the Grand National Steeplechase (4500m) in a fortnight’s time.

“It was a good win today, he won very comfortably in the end and it’s onwards and upwards going forward,” Pateman said after the race.

“The runner-up Cats Fun was always going to give a good kick having the soft run in front and he’ll be the one to beat again in the National but we held him off comfortably in the end.”

Trainer Ciaron Maher was celebrating his second major race win of the week, after winning the Grafton Cup (2350m) with Mr O’Ceirin on Thursday, but was already thinking ahead to a possible overseas tilt for Bashboy.

“I definitely am still considering it, Steve (Pateman) and myself both think he’s got what it takes,” Maher said.

“At the set weights today and back to Sandown he looked pretty well in and he’s been able to get the job done quite easily.

“He sort of stepped at one around the back and he jumped a couple a little bit short but that’s OK, you don’t mind that in these longer races.”

Bashboy suffered his only jumps racing defeat when he finished second behind Famous Prince in the 2010 Bourke Hurdle (3200m) at Pakenham.
