Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After a number of close calls this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival progressive three-year-old Lucky Hussler has opened the short priced favourite to win Saturday’s Tattersall’s Mile 2013 at Doomben.
Now prepared on the Gold Coat by David Kelly the former Kent Fleming-trained Husson gelding pays $2.10 through bookmaker.com.au to take out the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m).
Success would be their first turf triumph since narrowly holding off the gun Sizzling to win the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at the same Brisbane track on December 29 last year.
Lucky Hussler moved to Kelly’s stables at the end of May and has done little wrong since with three outstanding runs.
The first was a close third beaten just over half a length by Sizzling in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) on June 1 followed just seven days later by a third to Sydney raider Academus in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) also at Eagle Farm.
Their most recent effort saw them jump from a wide barrier (14 of 15) and still come within three quarters of a length of Eximius when second in the Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) on a Heavy (9) Sunshine Coast track on June 29.
Following Lucky Hussler in the Tattersall’s Mile betting odds for the weekend at $3.60 is then the in-form Loaded after their third win on the trot.
Grant Allard’s Gosford-based gelding Loaded was a second-up winner at Canterbury two back before a super impressive three length effort over the 1500m at Eagle Farm on July 6.
Saturday will be a notable step up in class for the rising six-year-old who is yet to race in black type company but confidence is high in the Allard camp.
In the big field there are just two other runners under double figures with the nicely-drawn duo of New Zealand visitor Jetset Lad (barrier three) and Firebolt (barrier one) both paying $9.50.
The John Wheeler-trained Jetset Lad has drawn nicely in gate three with Paul Hammersley to ride them on 57.5kg, the son of Elusive City looking to improve on their distant 11th last start in the Glasshouse Handicap where they failed to handle the Heavy (9) track.
Firebolt meanwhile has the inside alley but they will also be carting the 59kg topweight, Kelso Wood’s veteran Stravinsky seven-year-old having won this race 12 months ago over Jetset Lad and Listen Son.
Further down the markets at juicer prices are then genuine contenders including last year’s third placed Listen Son ($10) who is in good form this time in including their Group 3 BRC Sprint third in May, the Tony Gollan-trained Topping ($14) coming off three fourth place finishes including in the Toowoomba and Ipswich Cups, and local hope Solebid ($17) coming off a third in the Rockhampton Cup.
