Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Betting for the big one in WA this weekend is now open with two sprinters opening near equal favourites in the 2013 Beaufine Stakes odds.
Set to run as Race 7 at 3:55pm (local) at Perth’s Belmont Park Racecourse on Saturday, the $80,000 Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) this year attracted a final field of 10 hopefuls.
Of those 10 two are battling for top spot in the Beaufine Stakes betting markets with the current narrow favourite being Kalahaar at $2.80 just ahead of Right Time paying just 10 cents more to win.
Kalahaar may have the far outside barrier to overcome on Saturday but the bookies are taking no chances with the Steve Wolfe-trained Choisir four-year-old.
The Beaufine Stakes will be Kalahaar’s first black type assignment, the gelding not having raced since mid-March.
They have an ultra-consistent record however with six wins and four minor placings from their 13 starts which connections are hoping they can add to here.
As for Right Time, Paul Jordon’s Snippetson gelding comes off a good fourth at the track and distance from June 29 when carrying a hefty 59.5kg in a Benchmark 72.
A rising five-year-old, the horse comes right back to the 54kg minimum for this which is going to suit after they have had 58kg or more on their back for their past three runs.
The last time they had just 54kg Right Time finished second to Beach Express in the Listed Northam Toyota Stakes (1100m) in May, before which they won over the 1000m at Ascot.
There are then two other single-figure fancies out for an upset with O’Reilly six-year-old Honest Lies ($6), formerly prepared in Sydney by John O’Shea, who has drawn nicely in gate four and Settle Strada ($6.50).
Lark Hill galloper Settle Strada was well beaten in their last two runs at Ascot back in February but is a Belmont Park specialist so will love getting back to their pet track.
Last winter they had five consecutive starts at Belmont and after a first-up third went on to win their next four on the trot making them a top chance here at a nice price.
Other chances at longer odds that could prove awesome value then include Dan Morton’s Danewin gelding Zester ($18) with the 59kg topweight who was a first-up ninth to Kerrific in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) on June 1, Chris Gangemi’s Flying Spur six-year-old The Entourage ($18) and even Pop Culture ($21).
Smart four-year-old Blackfriars mare Pop Culture runs for the first time since her brave fourth when defeated only two lengths by Talent Show in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day where she had barrier 16 of 16 to overcome.
Before that she was in flying form with two stakes wins including in the Listed WA St Leger (2100m) as well as her fourth to Luckygray in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).
Pop Culture is a definite staying type so there’s no doubt she’s going to find the distance a little sharp on Saturday but she has won first-up over 1200m before so don’t rule her out completely.
