2013 Sir John Monash Stakes Betting Tips

This Saturday the sole black type in Melbourne will be Caulfield’s Sir John Monash Stakes 2013, betting tips and exclusive selections from the Races.com.au team for which are detailed below.

Mrs Onassis

Set to jump as Race 6 at 2:58pm (AEST) this year’s $120,000 Listed Polytrack Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) originally drew a final field of 11 hopefuls.

The early scratching of #1 Atomic Force however has left just 10 in contention with the narrow favourite being the flying Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Happy Galaxy.

The crack Nadeem colt is after their fifth win on the trot, Happy Galaxy last seen taking out the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) over fellow Monash Stakes rival Skytrain in early February.

Happy Galaxy pays $3.20 to add more black type to their record on the weekend.

It is a more experienced Group 1 winning mare that is the close second pick in the markets meanwhile with the Gerald Ryan-trained Mrs Onassis ($3.40) looking to return to her Oakleigh Plate winning form here.

Other notable hopes then include the Peter Snowden-trained veteran Skytrain ($8), last year’s third placegetter Zamorar ($9) and early market mover Second Effort ($9.50).

So are these single figure fancies the ones to lock into your Sir John Monash Stakes bets?

Or is there an upset on the cards, and if so, by who?

1st – #7 Zamorar ($9)

They’re drawn wide but think they will cut across and be right up there at the front from start to finish. Third in this race last year before some really nice Melbourne runs in late winter and think they can replicate something similar. Second-up at this track and distance is perfect, winner here last May. Come off a very close first-up second to Pago Rock at Flemington over the 1100m and will improve on that. If they handle the gate they can win, love the track and just need a bit of luck.

2nd – #10 Mrs Onassis ($3.40)

Last two Sydney runs by this General Nediym mare have been below par but expect her to bounce back getting back to the 1100m at Caulfield which she won the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate over and at first-up earlier this year. Gets a gun run from gate three sitting up on the speed and loves running fresh so tipping Ryan has her ready to go. Gets in nicely with the WFA conditions and think that, plus her love of Caulfield, will see her finish right up there.

3rd – #9 Happy Galaxy ($3.20)

Is the deserving favourite when you look at their awesome record leading up to this. A very smart three-year-old on the rise but haven’t run since February. Think there’s a big win in this one but maybe not at this track just yet. Could be wrong and it’ll be close so go Each Way?
