Youthful Jack Wins 2013 Ramornie Handicap

Veteran sprinter Youthful Jack upstaged a strong field to win the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton today.

The seven-year-old gelding was considered an outsider to record his tenth stakes victory but stormed home in the final stages of the race to win from Big Bonanza and Pentasia.

The race was set up perfectly for Youthful Jack who sat well off the pace while Adebisi and Big Bonanza set a quick tempo up front.

The early pace clearly took a toll on Adebisi, who faded to finish ninth, while Big Bonanza was able to battle on bravely but was swamped in the concluding stages by the winner.

All the talk in the lead-up to the race centered on the ability of Howmuchdoyouloveme to carry the top-weight of 60.5kg and set a Ramornie Handicap weight carrying record.

In the final two hundred metres of the race it became quite clear that the big weight was too much for last’s year winner who finished a dour fifth.

Youthful Jack’s trainer and owner Ross Stitt has been coming to the Grafton Cup Festival for eighteen years and was delighted to win the Ramornie Handicap with a close that is so close to his heart.

The evergreen gelding was purchased for only $5000 and has now won over $1 million in prizemoney.
