Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Winter racing in Melbourne really heats up this Saturday with the field for the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) that will be run at Caulfield on Saturday packed full of stars.
Headlining the field is autumn Group 1 winner Mrs Onassis who will return to the races for the first time since her disappointing effort in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in April.
The General Nediym mare has an excellent record first-up and began her last campaign with a career best win in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.
The John Monash Stakes is likely to be one Mrs Onassis’ last appearance at the races with trainer Gerald Ryan confirming earlier in the week that the five-year-old is unlikely to have a Spring Carnival campaign.
Mrs Onassis will carry 56.5kg and has been drawn to jump from barrier three.
Team Hawkes-trained Happy Galaxy will be looking to extend his winning streak to five races in a row when he jumps from barrier six in the John Monash Stakes this weekend.
The classy colt was victorious in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm in February before being sent for a spell.
Trainer John Hawkes said the long term plan for the Nadeem colt was the Hong Kong International Sprint (1200m) in December and is confident Happy Galaxy can win on Saturday despite not being fully wound up for racing.
Second Effort is another last start winner in the field and will jump from barrier number four.
The underrated gelding scored an impressive victory in the Wangoom Handicap (1200m) at Warrnambool at his last start and according to trainer Clinton McDonald is in career best form.
The Mossman gelding had a successful 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, winning the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and finishing third behind Sincero and Happy Trails in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
Darley gelding Skytrain will jump from barrier eight while last winner Pago Rock and veteran sprinter Stanzout will start from the inside alleys.
