The Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) is the feature race at Belmont this weekend with an interesting field of ten runners set to contest the $80,000 sprint.
Daniel Morton-trained Zester has been lumped with the top weight of 59kg as he continues his return from a spell after a busy spring and summer campaign.
Zester finished an uninspiring ninth in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) first-up and hasn’t been victorious since his win in the Listed Bolton Spring (1200m) at Belmont over twelve months ago.
The Danewin gelding performed admirably in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Kingston Town Classic (1800m) last summer and should appreciate the drop back in class and distance.
Pop Culture is set to return to the races for the first time since her gutsy fourth place finish in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m).
The Blackfriars mare was impressive during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival recording victories in the Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) and WA St Leger (2100m).
The versatile galloper is better over a longer trip but has previously won over 1200 metres.
Trustee Brown will also return from a spell in the Beaufine Stakes and has drawn the inside barrier.
The six-year-old gelding finished his summer campaign with a disappointing eighth place finish in the Pinjarra Classic (1500m) and, with a poor first-up record, will likely need a few more runs to return to his best this campaign.
Last year’s winner Megem’s Boy is back to defend his title and will once again carry 54kg.
The Danehill Dancer gelding hasn’t been successful since his victory in last year’s race and has been disappointing since beginning his winter campaign in May.
Megem’s Boy is aiming to become the first back-to-back winner of the Beaufine Stakes since Great Nation in 2006.
Settle Strada has gotten in well in the weights and will carry 54kg from barrier number five.
The Strada four-year-old was extremely impressive in 2012, winning four straight races during his three-year-old campaign, but hasn’t lived up to his potential since returning to the races in 2013.
Rounding out the Beaufine Stakes field is The Entourage who will jump from barrier number seven and is searching for his first victory since 2011.
The full 2013 Beaufine Stakes field, barriers, jockeys and weights can be found in the table below.
