The lucrative Princess Series of races could be on the cards this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival for one of Gerald Ryan’s favourite ladies, Snitzel’s Jewel.
The promising Snitzel filly debuted at Gosford in early February and caught the eye with a one and a quarter length win over the Clarry Conners-trained So French in the $22,000 Jim Beam Summer Season Handicap (1000m).
While he tries hard not to play favourites Ryan admits that the rising three-year-old has fast become one of his stable aces.
“I really love her,” Ryan said.
“They don’t have to be the best to be your favourite.
“She’s got attitude and style and I’ve got a lot of time for her.
“I trained her mother Princess Shorna and she ran second to Lady Jakeo at her first start but she never really reached her potential. She got a virus which knocked her around a bit.”
Ryan also trained her sire Snitzel including their 2006 Oakleigh Plate victory.
He is then very much looking forward to racing her again in a two-year-olds handicap over 1000m at Warwick Farm this Saturday in her big city debut with a jockey still to be decided.
Ryan is hoping Snitzel’s Jewel can produce another winning effort to retain her undefeated status ahead of the spring where he will look to step her up into black type company.
Confident he’s got a smart racehorse on his hands he has the four-race Princess Series for the fillies in mind which kicks off back at Warwick Farm in last August with the $175,000 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
Two more Group 2 races at Randwick continue the series with the $175,000 Furious Stakes (1200m) on September 7 and then the $175,000 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later before it’s up to elite level.
The Princess Series concludes at Royal Randwick on Saturday October 5 with the lucrative $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and Ryan has his fingers crossed Snitzel’s Jewel can go all the way to the mile classic.
“If she measures up then she will head to the Princess Series in the new season,” he said.
