2013 Grafton Cup Tips & Selections

After the Ramornie Handicap gets things going at Grafton Racecourse on Wednesday the premier Grafton Cup Carnival event runs on Thursday with the Grafton Cup 2013 taking centre stage, the Races.com.au team’s insider tips for which are detailed below.

This year marks the centenary edition of the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) with a full field of 16 stayers, plus three emergencies, engaged for Race 7 at 3:53pm (AEST).

It’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive and strongest Grafton Cup fields in many years making it a tough time for punters to pick the winner.

The bookies are saying the Grafton Cup trophy will go home with Joe Pride’s last start Winter Cup winner Destiny’s Kiss who is top of the markets at $4.40.

The only other single-figure fancies are then Caloundra Cup champ Zennista ($5) and Mr O’Ceirin ($7.50) with the ‘visitor’s draw’.

So is this dominant trio the ones to lock into your Grafton Cup trifecta bets?

Or should punters be looking a little further down the Grafton Cup odds for value with some genuine hopes at juicy prices including the consistent Peter Moody-trained Voila Ici ($10), luckless Winter Cup runner-up Fiumicino ($12) or even Ipswich Cup champ from two starts back Anagold ($26)?

To save you time trolling through the Grafton Cup form we’ve done the hard work for you with the expert tipsters at Races.com.au making their insider betting tips public knowledge right here!

#7 Peal Of Bells ($15)

Is at a generous price here as they the Gwenda Markwell-trained gelding was beaten 24 lengths finishing dead last in the Winter Cup last start. Put a line straight through that and forget, they are going to bounce back. They missed some serious work leading up to that, found the Heavy (9) at Rosehill unsuitable and didn’t like the distance having run two miles to win the Stayers Cup by seven lengths the start before. Really classy stayer, will be better for that run and better at Grafton. Get in on the minimum weight and can handle all track conditions as proven by their Warwick Farm win in May on a Heavy (8). They’ve got improving to do but think they can get the job done and atone.

#2 Zennista ($5)

Really nice New Zealand-trained mare in prime form. Considered for the Queensland Cup over the 3200m last Saturday but trainer Lisa Latta decided to save them for this so she likely thinks they can win – and they probably can. Gets a good run from gate eight with Damian Browne aboard and is a serious threat. Were third in the Brisbane Cup two back at Eagle Farm from gate 17 of 18 beaten just over a length and proved that form with their big 2.5 length Caloundra Cup win (2400m) last start in the wet. Only goes up a little in the weights and beat many of these same horses there with the same jockey aboard so could do it again if they’re not past it late in the season.

#4 Destiny’s Kiss ($4.40)

Deserved favourite and can see why they’re top of the markets, just think going from the mud at Rosehill to Grafton could take it out of them. Has a really wide draw here too (17) so there’s that to consider, but can still run a place with the right run. Back-to-back wins behind them and distance looks right, Winter Cup victory was really too easy and regular rider Christian Reith stays on. Pros and cons, don’t think they’ll salute for favourite backers but will put in all exotics.
