Summah’s Touch Scores Easy 2013 Belmont Oaks Win

She jumped odds on favourite and proved worthy of her short price with the Adam Durrant-trained Summah’s Touch the easy Belmont Oaks 2013 winner in WA on Saturday.

The three-year-old Blackfriars filly retained her undefeated status this time in when scoring for the punters in the $80,000 Listed Gold Front Thoroughbreds Belmont Oaks (2000m) at Belmont Park Racecourse.

It was her second win on the trot after her impressive one and a half length victory over the boys in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) at the same track 14 days earlier.

This time her margin increased to two lengths as she took on her own company in the Oaks, Summah’s Touch going one better than her second to Moreish in the Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m) at Ascot back in early April.

Ridden by her Belmont Guineas winning apprentice jockey Ben Paterson again the $1.80 top fancy enjoyed the set weights conditions of the Belmont Oaks and cruised home to defeat Sharon Miller’s $31 roughie Elle On Friar.

Rounding out the Belmont Oaks trifecta a further one and three quarter lengths away in third was then the Grant Williams-trained last start Belmont winner Fashion Princess ($6.50).

“She’s probably my favourite horse now,” Paterson, who sits on 28 winners in the city apprentice’s premiership this season, said of Summah’s Touch after Saturday’s win.

Summah’s Touch was a $30,000 buy at the 2011 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale but Durrant on behalf of co-owner Neville Hall who had approached the trainer at a Pinjarra race day a couple of months earlier.

She has now amassed over $335,000 for her connections, a dream result for Hall who finished up a Melbourne trip early to be there in person for Belmont Oaks Day.

“I named Summah’s Touch after my granddaughter, Summah,” Hall said.

“She’s three years old, just like Summah’s Touch. She’s my first horse and it’s just been great.”

There is now a chance Durrant will vie for the triple crown and back Summah’s Touch up Saturday week in the $80,000 Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) with the main deterrent being the Fred Kersley-trained Northpace.

“I’m not sure whether I want her to go against Northpace,” Durrant admitted.

Cape North three-year-old Northpace, third to Summah’s Touch in the Belmont Guineas, was an eye catching three and a half length winner of the Dayana Plate (2000m) on the weekend coming from last to first in an easy kill.
