Spring Campaign for 2013 All Victorian Sprint Final Winner Riziz

An impressive Flemington win in the All Victorian Sprint Series Final 2013 over the weekend has Morphettville trainer Ken Sweeney eyeing some nice, albeit conservative, spring races for his smart gelding Riziz.

The in-form Zariz four-year-old posted their second win on the trot in Saturday’s $120,000 Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) and could now be kept in work with an eye on the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Back in May Sweeney was confident Riziz was fit enough to win the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at home in WA.

On race day however they could only manage to finish a luckless seventh beaten just two lengths by Platelet.

From there they went to Swan Hill for an easy three length kill in the Golden Topaz (1200m) on June 7 a month before the All Victorian Sprint Final.

On Saturday Riziz, who jumped the $2.35 favourite, was ridden by their Golden Topaz winning jockey Paul Gatt again and were emphatic in their victory putting one and a quarter lengths on Livigno ($31).

In a close third was then Nicholls Court ($17).

“As soon as we got out of the barriers and we got a smother behind Luke (Nolen), while I wasn’t counting the money yet, I was pretty confident,” winning jockey Paul Gatt said post-win.

“I popped out probably a little bit sooner than what I wanted to but he can hit a bit of a flat spot.

“He was there to be beaten a furlong (200m) out but to his credit he takes a little bit of running down, there’s not much of him but he’s got plenty of guts.”

Sweeney has spent the best part of the last 50 years in the racing business meaning while he was pleased with Saturday’s final win, he was keeping his targets low-key for Riziz over the coming months.

“We’ll look at a couple of those Group 3 sprints over the next few weeks,” he said.

“He’s a very nice horse, but I’m not getting carried away. You can’t be disappointed if you do it like that.

“You can get carried away at this time of the year.

“He’s a nice little horse and he likes it a bit soft. He’ll show us in time how good he is.”

Riziz now boasts a perfect two-from-two record at Victoria’s premier track having also won the Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington just over a year ago.

“It was a very similar win to the day he won here last year in the Creswick,” Sweeney said on Saturday.

While the spring won’t be too ambitious Sweeney did say they would prepare for another Group 1 campaign next autumn again targeting The Goodwood.

“I’ll just keep him to Group 3 level sprints over the next couple of months because he’s not really very good in the summer and then we’ll go back to The Goodwood next year,” he said.
