While they still have plenty of learning to do, a weekend win in Sydney has boosted the 2013 Golden Rose ambitions of the Bart Cummings-trained youngster Eurozone.
A winner on debut at Canterbury on June 19 the Northern Meteor colt, an $110,000 purchase from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, retained their undefeated status at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Ridden by Tim Clark from a favourable barrier one draw in the $85,000 Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m) Eurozone relished a softer track and stormed home to defeat the odds-on favourite.
On the line they had three quarters of a length to spare over Gai Waterhouse’s last start Randwick winner Bull Point ($1.70) who struggled after being late out of the gates with Wouldn’t It Be Nice a distant third.
“He wasn’t great getting away but he was disappointing,” rival hoop Nash Rawiller said of the effort of Bull Point.
Part-owner Michael Alexeef made the trip over from WA to Sydney to view the win and was quick to credit the ride of Clark who controlled the race throughout.
“Tim rode him confidently,” he said.
“He popped off the fence and took command of the race by doing that, his destiny was in his own hands.”
While it’s an ambitious aim Cummings and connections are eyeing a shot at the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Racecourse on September 14 for Eurozone, so long as they continue to progress through the ranks.
“He’s still got some growing to do and is still learning his race-craft,” stable foreman and Cummings’ grandson James Cummings said.
“We’ve paid up for the Golden Rose but he has to get there.
” There is a race of a similar nature here in a couple of weeks and if he does really well we might put him in that (Golden Rose), but I think Bart might keep him warm in the stable during the cold months.
“The horse has a good turn of foot, race craft and he’s a natural, and I think if we can keep him ticking over then he might be able to kick a goal for us.”
