Civic Stakes 2013 Tips

While the cream of the crop won’t be stepping out in Saturday’s mid-winter Rosehill meeting, the Listed 2013 Civic Stakes (1350m) presents an even field of sprinters which should ensure an intriguing race.

In the eight-horse field the shortest-priced galloper is Said Com at $4.40 who is one of three Chris Waller-trained contenders in the day’s feature race.

Joining the Group 1 runner-up from Waller’s stable are fellow key chances Nocturnelle ($5) and Disciple ($6.50).

In a testament to just how open the race is, six of the eight contenders fall under double figures. Other in-form horses chasing Civic Stakes success include Gai Waterhouse’s last-start winner Under The Sun ($5.50) and Gerald Ryan’s sprinting three-year-old Dances On Stars ($6.50).

First

#8 Disciple $6.50

The least fancied of Waller’s three runners looks well placed here. Always happy to go with an in-form horse on an upward spiral and that is what Disciple certainly is. Steps up to stakes grade for the first time after impressing in three starts this campaign. Won his first two starts this preparation before finishing a narrow second at the same track and distance last start. Fourth-up and ready to fire.

Second

#2 See The World $9

A dual Listed winner who looks well placed here. Struggled at Group 3 level in Brisbane last start but has never been a good traveller. Back in Sydney where he thrives. Consistent sprinter who has won eight times and placed another 10 from 30 starts.

Third

#3 Said Com $4.40

Has always shown potential – he was a Group 1 runner-up as a three-year-old – and the gelding has begun to hit his straps again of late. Coming off a strong last-start win at Rosehill last month and if he can repeat that performance he should be in the top three here.
