Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday Rosehill Racecourse will host its latest winter feature with the 2013 Civic Stakes taking centre stage, and it seems the bookies are having a hard time separating the top fancies.
There were just eight acceptors for this year’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) field with all but two of the hopefuls under double figures in the early markets.
Narrow favourite in the latest Civic Stakes odds is the Chris Waller-trained Said Com at $4.40 who is one of three chances for Sydney’s premiership winning trainer.
Drawn in barrier six with Nash Rawiller to ride the O’Reilly four-year-old is after back-to-back wins at Rosehill having defeated a decent field in a 1400m handicap on June 15.
Said Com is yet to win a black type in their 20 start career but has been competitive in some Group 2 and 3 races including their third to Lights Of Heaven in the Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) here back in April.
Occupying the second line of Civic Stakes betting hot on Said Com’s heels at $5 is then one of their stablemates Nocturnelle.
Waller’s four-year-old Elusive Quality mare hasn’t won a race since October last year but is a stakes winner in Sydney and is tipped to bounce back after her last start failure.
There were excuses for her when beaten 11 lengths to defeat just one other runner crossing 10th to Said Com three weeks ago and she should get a much kinder run from gate four with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle here as she comes back from 57kg to 54kg.
The other single-figure fancies are then:
- #6 Under The Sun ($5.50) – Gai Waterhouse’s last start Randwick winner has a great record at Rosehill but is yet to break through in stakes company
- #7 Dances On Stars ($6.50) – Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel three-year-old was a brave second in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) two back from a wide gate before failing on the Ipswich circuit when 13th in the Eye Liner, Rosehill will suit better as they get back to Sydney having won their last start at this track and distance by a big margin back in December
- #8 Disciple ($6.50) – God’s Own four-year-old been racing very consistently this time in with back-to-back wins at Rosehill over the 1200m before being defeated a mere nose over the 1350m here on June 15, carried 57kg then from barrier 10 of 12 and will relish 54kg with gate 7 here
- #2 See The World ($9) – Joe Pride-trained multiple stakes winner was in good form in Sydney earlier this prep including a three length win in the Listed Maurice McCarton Stakes before their 11th in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben in May, was only beaten 3.5 lengths but and has had a freshen up
The other two gallopers in the mix are then both under $20 to score an upset with Liam Birchely’s Brisbane based Choisir mare Whateverwhenever at $11 and the 59kg topweight Mic Mac paying $17 to break a four year drought.
