Ibicenco Leads Queensland Cup Odds 2013

This weekend top Victorian horseman Peter Moody will look to snare a late black type win for the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival saddling up the favourite Ibicenco in the 2013 Queensland Cup at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

Ibicenco

Of the 13 stayers accepted for the two mile classic it is Sandown Cup winner Ibicenco the bookies are tipping to win Saturday’s $150,000 Listed BMag Queensland Cup (3200m).

Opening at the top of the markets at quote of $2.90 the Shirocco stallion, formerly prepared by Luca Cumani in Europe, is after their second win down under.

Last spring they raced in Melbourne under Cumani’s care and while they missed out on a shot at the Melbourne Cup failing to make the final 24, they did enjoy a 3200m victory in the Listed Sandown Cup in November.

That’s the form Moody is hoping to recapture with the rising six-year-old, Ibicenco last seen running a brave fourth to Rialya in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 22.

In a relatively open Queensland Cup betting market there are then four other single figure fancies with:

  • #2 Peal Of Bells ($4) – Emphatic seven length Stayers Cup winner over the two miles at Randwick last month, bummed out at Rosehill in the mud on Monday when defeated 23.5 lengths finishing last to Destiny’s Kiss in the Winter Cup, can they handle the short back-up? Will they bounce back getting back up to the 3200m?
  • #6 Turner Bayou ($4.80) – Patrick Payne-trained Zabeel gelding is bred to stay and has been racing well this winter including a 2400m win in the mud on a Heavy (10) two back at Sandown Hillside, also raced there over the same distance last week and carried 60kg to a brave second, will love the 54kg on Saturday
  • #3 Verdant ($5) – Robert Smerdon’s Ballarat based galloper was 11th in the Brisbane Cup and sixth in the Tatt’s Cup at this track last month, need to really improve on those runs to be competitive here but were a good sixth in the Sandown Cup last year and there best form has been over 2800m or more including a Melbourne Cup Day victory in the spring
  • #4 Muirfield ($8.50) – Don Edurado gelding was seventh and then sixth respectively in the Ipswich and Caloundra Cups, never far off them but and is a genuine stayer that should appreciate the roomier Eagle Farm course

The rest of the Queensland Cup field are then at odds of $31 or longer meaning if a horse outside the top five salutes such as last start winners Toowoomba galloper Dodging Eddie ($34) or Gold Coast mudlark Buffett ($31) it will be a massive boilover.
