Perth trainer Adam Durrant is eyeing off some of the nation’s biggest races with Mr Moet and will kick off his 2013 Melbourne Cup campaign in the recently elevated Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).
The $350,000 Makybe Diva will take place at Flemington on September 7 and will serve as the first lead-up run into the stayer’s bigger spring targets.
While the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup is the pie in the sky goal for the five-year-old, Durrant will also target the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) with the winner of more than $1.36 million in prizemoney.
A Group 1 winner in the 2012 Railway Stakes in Perth, the spring will be Mr Moet’s second trip to Melbourne.
The son of Mosayter acquitted himself comfortably in the autumn, recording minor placings in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and Group 2 Peter Young Stakes before running sixth to star three-year-old Super Cool in the Australian Cup.
At Perth’s Summer carnival he proved himself as one of the best gallopers in the west, winning the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes and finishing second in both the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic and Group 2 Perth Cup.
Joining Mr Moet in making a trip east for Durrant this spring will be Kincaple. The former Victorian stayer made a tremendous return to the track last month when winning the Group 3 Strickland Stakes in just his second start back from an 18-month injury enforced spell.
While the seven-year-old is unlikely to feature in any of the spring majors, Durrant is hopeful he will be able to pick up some stakes success on the east coast.
Under former trainer Mark Reed the winner of eight of 29 starts took out both the Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie Cups.
