2013 Winter Championship Series Final Field Announced

This weekend Victoria’s Flemington Racecourse will come to life for Finals Day with one of the two black type features on the eight-race program being the Winter Championship Series Final 2013.

Due to run as Flemington Race 6 at 2:57pm (AEST) on Saturday the $150,000 Listed TROA/Luxbet Winter Championship Series Final (1600m) has attracted a final field of 13 milers.

Heading the field and weights with 60kg is the Robert Smerdon-trained The Cleaner who also is out wide in barrier 12 with Craig Newitt to ride.

Formerly prepared in Tasmania by Mick Burles Saoire Vivre gelding The Cleaner has their maiden run for Smerdon this weekend as they back-up from a nice win in the David Bourke Provincial Plate over the Flemington mile on June 22.

For that winning effort The Cleaner carried 58kg and overcame the extreme outside barrier 14 of 14.

Following the Tassie expat in the Winter Championship Series Final field and weights on 57.5kg is then Michael O’Leary’s dual defending champ Glaneuse.

While the recent form of this Blevic seven-year-old has been poor the Mount Gambier-based O’Leary is hopeful they can turn things around when they attempt a record third consecutive Winter Championship Finals win.

They haven’t won a race since last year’s Winter Championship and were in danger of missing out on a run this year but have snuck in with a number of defectors.

Along with The Cleaner there are two other last start winners in the race this year with the Jarrod McLean-trained former Group 2 winner Blackie coming off a mile win at Moonee Valley from last Saturday and Peter Moody’s Show A Heart mare Dayita.

Four-year-old Dayita is another Valley winner from last weekend going up to an open field after beating home the fillies and mares last start.

Moody has also accepted for his Danehill Dancer mare Storm Burst, the stablemates drawn ideally in barriers one and two respectively.

Other notable hopes coming off some good recent form then include Quinton Scott’s perennial runner-up Another Prelate coming off three consecutive seconds this time in all in the Winter Championship heats, and the John Sadler-trained six-year-old Under The Hat.
