After a lengthy recovery from a broken pelvis Joe Byrne’s brave filly Lady Trader will continue her resuming campaign with a shot at black type glory in Saturday’s Belmont Oaks 2013 in WA.
The daughter of Trade Fair spent six and a half months on the sidelines after her nasty pelvic break suffered in a Bunbry trial last November.
Plenty of patience from Byrne and seven months later she returned at Pinjarra in early May.
She has progressed well since then finally breaking her maiden status at career start number nine last Saturday at Belmont Park in the Tabtouch.Mobi Handicap (2200m).
“She broke her pelvis in two places and is lucky to be racing,” her Ascot-based trainer and noted horse breaker Byrne said.
“We just boxed her for a couple of months and took things slowly from there.
“She seems to have recovered pretty well.
Byrne is now looking at a seven day back-up with another run at the track in Saturday’s $80,000 Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) where she could face the likes of Belmont Guineas winner Summah’s Touch and WA Oaks third placed Fashion Princess.
While it is going to be a tough edition of the Belmont Oaks Byrne has had it on Lady Trader’s agenda since her recovery.
His only worry is the step back down from a mile and a half, which she thrived over, back to the 2000m.
“We’ve been waiting two years to get her up over ground,” he said.
“It’s a pity the Oaks isn’t over 2400 – the longer the better for her.
“As a two-year-old, she had no sprint but she was running close to them over shorter distances.
“I always thought she would be good over ground. She has a lovely stride on her.”
All going to plan Byrnes will keep Lady Trader in work for the $80,000 Belmont Classic (2200m) against the boys a fortnight after the Oaks.
Her last start winning jockey Troy Tuner will retain the ride for the Belmont Oaks.
Turner will be vying for his second Belmont Oaks success having won the 2008 edition with Rock My Pago.
He also boasts successive WA Oaks wins having ridden the past two winners with Moreish (2013) and Pop Culture (2012).
