Winter Cup 2013 Runs Today – Monday July 1, 2013

After the continued heavy rain in Sydney saw Saturday’s Rosehill Gardens meeting abandoned, the 2013 Winter Cup and the other events on the card were postponed until today.

And despite early concerns over another desertion, stewards have deemed the track safe for racing following a dawn inspection.

Now Monday punters get to enjoy a black type race to brighten up the start of the working week with the rescheduled $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m) to run as Race 5 at 2:07pm (AEST) this afternoon.

There were originally 11 final acceptors for the Winter Cup field.

However Rosehill is still rated a Heavy (10), with the chance of a minor upgrade with fine weather on the cards for the rest of the day, and as such there are a few early withdrawals across the card and in the marquee race.

There are three Winter Cup scratchings with #6 Yulalona, #8 Piazza San Pietro and #9 Platinum Jack.

The same favourite remains at the top of the odds as for the weekend’s washout with the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss who pays $2.40 to win the wet winter showdown.

Drawn in gate four with Christian Reith to ride the Power Of Destiny four-year-old is after successive wins.

They were last seen at Rosehill two weeks back winning a 2000m handicap.

They also have plenty of wet weather track experience with six starts on Heavy ground for three wins, two on Heavy (10) tracks in Melbourne.

It is an open Winter Cup betting affair from there then with four other single figure fancies including $3.40 second pick Peal Of Bells.

Gwenda Markwell’s Clangalang gelding is vying for their third win on the trot.

Two back they proved their potential on Heavy going with a Warwick Farm win over 2020m carrying a hefty 61.5kg to victory.

Last start on June 8 they then outclassed their rivals at Randwick by an incredible seven lengths winning the Stayer’s Cup over the two miles.

The other horses under $10 in the markets are then Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 performing stayer Reuben Percival ($5.50), rising Zabeel 10-year-old and 59kg topweight Fiumicino ($7) out to improve on their Brisbane Cup failure, and Diatribe mare Fibrillation ($8) who hasn’t won a race since March last year in Sydney.
