Kiwi Caloundra Cup Winner 2013 With Zennista

Lisa Latta’s New Zealand-trained mare Zennista proved the form line coming out of the Brisbane Cup on Saturday with her big win in the 2013 Caloundra Cup.

Relishing the Heavy (9) track at the Sunshine Coast the Zenno Rob Roy five-year-old, a $5.50 chance in betting, was too good for her rivals in the $200,000 Listed Yalumba Caloundra Cup (2400m).

After being poised just off the front runners she made her move soon after the turn from home.

From there it was all about Zennista who ran away with a two and a half length victory over Peter Moody’s 59.5kg top-weight Voila Ici ($13)

Finishing off the Caloundra Cup trifecta a further two lengths away again was then the Brian Smith-trained Rothera ($5).

The $3.30 favourite Shenzhou Steeds failed to go back-to-back in the event having won the Caloundra Cup in similar wet conditions 12 months ago but was still far from disgraced in fourth.

Zennista has been thriving down under since arriving in the sunshine state back in May enjoying three top four finishes at Group level before her break through Australian win on Saturday.

Leading into the Caloundra Cup she was a brave third behind Moriarty and Quintessential in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) having come within a length and a bit of the winner despite her horror barrier 17 draw.

Jockey Damian Browne predicted that that form would stack up in the Caloundra Cup and he was right with Zennista thriving from her inside barrier to take out the winter classic.

It was a special moment for the usually reserved Browne who happily saluted to the fans once over the line, enjoying the home town victory.

“It means a lot to win your home town Cup,” he said.

“I won the Glasshouse a couple of years ago (on Woorim) and now I’ve won the two main races on my home track. It’s a great feeling.”

Winning trainer Latta was quick to praise both the hoop and the horse post-race saying she knew there would be improvement coming out of the Brisbane Cup.

“It was a beautiful ride by Damian and it’s a big help to have a rider that knows these tracks so well,” she said.

“She drew 22 (into 17) in the Brisbane Cup and had to lead them up. She didn’t settle as well in front and did a good job to finish third.”

Latta went on to say the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival had been in their sights for a long time, Zennista finally starting to show the same form that saw her run second in the 2011 New Zealand Oaks as three-year-old before a bleeding attack.

“We aimed at this carnival a long way out,” she said.

“Back home she was getting weighted with 59kg and racing in mud up to her knees. It’s very pleasing to see the plan come together.”

Zennista is now likely to back up in the $150,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm this Saturday before a possible spring return for the Melbourne carnival.

“I’ve been keen to get her to 3200m, so we might as well have a shot while the race is there,” Latta said.
