Fashion Princess to Strut Stuff in Belmont Oaks 2013

Progressive Grant Williams-trained filly Fashion Princess will put her talent on show at Belmont Park this Saturday when she takes on the Belmont Guineas winner in the 2013 Belmont Oaks.

Sure-to-be favourite in the $80,000 Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) this weekend in WA is Adam Durrant’s Blackfriars filly Summah’s Touch.

Third in the Group 3 WA Oaks over the mile and a half last April Summah’s Touch earned a shot at the Belmont Oaks with her brilliant first-up victory over the boys in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) on June 22.

One fellow three-year-old filly out for an upset Belmont Oaks result is then the Bob and Sandra Peters-owned daughter of Iffraaj Fashion Princess.

A $100,000 buy from New Zealand back in 2011, her purchaser and co-owner Bob Peters is keen to have a crack at this weekend’s Oaks trophy despite the presence of Summah’s Touch.

“She has not done a lot whereas Summah’s Touch is more seasoned,” he said.

“It might be a bit stupid running against Summah’s Touch when you look at the ratings and what she might cop.”

Fashion Princess has had seven starts to date for two victories.

As yet untested in black type company her maiden win came at Bunbury back in February over 1420m.

She was then back in the winners’ stall at Belmont Park on June 19 beating home Fred Kersley’s Tiger Hill gelding Go Tiger by a length in a one metro win handicap over 1700m.

It will be a big step up in class and distance for Fashion Princess but Peters knows you only get one shot at these three-year-old races.

“She had done all right and these races only come around once,” he said.

Perth’s leading owner-breeders the Peters have been relishing a top week with victories at Belmont and Northam by young guns Celebrity Miss, Arcadia Rose and Western Gem.

Dark Delight, Monumental and Elite Belle also won for them on Strickland Stakes Day at Belmont on Saturday adding to their dominance.

Peters is looking to continue the winning streak with New Image in the Belmont Oaks, a race he won back in 2010 with New Image.

The official Belmont Oaks 2013 nominations are due for release shortly so stay tuned.
