Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
While the Sunshine Coast is host to Caloundra Cup Day on Saturday, over in WA the weekend’s sole Group race is set to light up Belmont Park Racecourse with the 2013 Strickland Stakes taking centre stage.
This year’s edition of the weight-for-age classic has drawn a full field of local hopefuls with 14 starters, plus the Chris Gangemi-trained The Underworld as the sole emergency, engaged to face off in the $125,000 Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m).
Three of the acceptors are currently under double figures in the Strickland Stakes betting markets, the favourite of which at $3.70 is Kincaple.
Drawn nicely in barrier two with Daniel Staeck engaged for the ride Adam Durrant’s veteran Pentire seven-year-old hasn’t won a race since the 2011 Kalgoorlie Cup when prepared by Mark Reed but is tipped to break the drought on the weekend.
After spending nearly a year and a half on the sidelines Kincaple returned to racing on June 15 with a seventh to Black Tycoon in the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) beaten only 2.5 lengths, an effort they can improve on second-up going up to the 2000m for the Strickland.
Hot on their heels at $4 in the markets is then Hyperion Stakes winner Black Tycoon who has suffered a blow drawing the extreme outside gate.
Justin Warwick’s Blackfirars gelding, also seven, has been in flying form of late winning six of their past eight starts with winning form up to 2100m when taking out the Geraldton Cup by five lengths and an Ascot handicap by two during April.
The final single figure chance in the Strickland Stakes odds at $5 is then Group 1 performer Ranger in gate six with William Pike in the saddle.
The Grant Williams-trained Testa Rossa six-year-old has been ultra-competitive this season with three to three finishes in as many starts all at Belmont.
Two back they were third to Kerrific in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) before finishing under a quarter length away third to Black Tycoon and Kerrific in the Hyperion.
A genuine stayer Ranger has winning form at stakes level in Perth up to 2100m and is a former Group 2 winner.
There are plenty of other longer priced chances with genuine claims for an upset in the Strickland this year including Warwick’s other runner Global Flirt ($11) who was third in the Perth Cup back in January, smart Pinjarra Cup winning mare Moonlight Bay ($14), Neville Parnham’s dual Group 1 winner Playing God ($14), Dan Morton’s Hyperion Stakes fourth placed Oratorio gelding Belora ($15) and Miss Tipsy Topsy ($17) with the inside running from barrier one.
