Despite drawing a horror gate, Mick Price’s promising three-year-old Eximius has opened top of the odds for this Saturday’s Sunshine Coast Guineas 2013 on Caloundra Cup Day in Queensland.
The last on a bumper nine-race program at the Sunshine Coast this weekend, the $100,000 Listed XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) has drawn a capacity field of 18 starters plus five emergencies.
One of the widest drawn in the field with gate 19 (into 14 with emergencies out) is Exceed And Excel gelding Eximius.
The awkward barrier however hasn’t been enough to deter the bookies installing them as the early $3.70 favourite in a relatively open Sunshine Coast Guineas betting market.
A winner of three of their 12 starts to date, most recently over 1400m at Sandown in early April, Eximius has had mixed form this time in but looked right on track for some black type success when just half a length second to Sydneysider Academus in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.
The distance is right and they perform well in the wet so if they overcome the barrier they are in with a shot at saluting for the punters.
Following closely in the Sunshine Coast Guineas odds at $4.20, out from their earlier price of $4, is then Lucky Hussler who has also drawn a disaster barrier (21).
David Kelly’s Gold Coast-based Husson gelding has been in good form this time in, the former Kent Fleming-trained galloper finishing a close third to Sizzling in the Gorup 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) two back before their third in the Daybreak Lover.
A former Group 3 winner over 1350m in the Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben during the summer, Lucky Hussler is a class galloper but can they improve enough to defeat these rivals from that gate?
In a battle for the top three spots another interstate raider Dances On Stars pays $4.80, out from $4.40.
The Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel gelding is another coming via the Queensland Guineas when a half length second but was very disappointing at Ipswich on June 15 when beaten 16 lengths to finish 13th to Conservatorium in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m).
They are drawn nicely in gate nine with Paul Hammersley, replacing Brenton Avdulla, to ride on Saturday however and can improve with the step back down in grade.
The only other hopeful under double figures is then the in-form Luke’s Luck ($6) from Kelly Schweida’s Eagle Farm stables, the progressive son of Show A Heart stepping back up to black type company after two easier runs at the Gold Coast and then Ipswich where they finished second in both.
Other longer priced acceptors out to score an upset Sunshine Coast Guineas result then include Casino Card ($14) who has won four of their past five starts including the TL Cooney Handicap over Luke’s Luck last start, early market mover Lady Echelon ($21) who has the home track advantage having won by five lengths here over the mile in May and John Thompson’s out of form galloper Ferment ($26).
