Much has been made of Saturday’s Caloundra Cup meeting in Queensland but the only Group race across the country this Saturday is the Group 3 2013 Strickland Stakes (2000m) at Perth’s Belmont Racecourse.
Some of Western Australia’s best horses will line up in a 14-horse field that is headed in betting at $3.80 by Adam Durrant’s seven-year-old Kincaple.
Challenging for favouritism in the Strickland Stakes market is last-start winner Black Tycoon ($4) while the consistent Ranger is at $5.50 to turn some solid performances into victory.
No other runners are under double figures but there are plenty of Perth’s big-race regulars in the field including Playing God ($16) and God Has Spoken ($26).
#8 Black Tycoon $4
Was a Group 3 winner in the Hyperion Stakes earlier this month and can go on with it here. Trainer Justin Warwick has Railway Stakes ambitions for this horse who has won nine times and finished in the minors another eight from 22 starts. Faces a 400m rise in distance from his last-start win but that shouldn’t worry the son of Blackfriars who is a two-time winner over 2100m.
#3 Ranger $5.50
Often a source of frustration for punters, the six-year-old gelding steps up to what is probably his best trip here. He hasn’t won since November 2011 but he has found himself in the top three in three starts at Group level this campaign. There’s no reason why he won’t again find himself towards the front of the field if he can repeat his Hyperion Stakes performance.
#6 Belora $17
At a surprisingly big price given his recent performances. The 2000m is a slight query but there’s been no faulting his runs this time in. Was second in the Belmont Sprint two starts back and was a solid fourth in the Hyperion.
