The major part of Queensland’s winter carnival may be over but there are still some highly competitive stakes races to take place including this Saturday’s Listed $200,000 2013 Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast.
The long-distance test may not attract the cream of the country’s staying crop but it generally features a big, even field and this year is no exception.
A capacity field of 18 horses will line up, with a combination of southern raiders and local hopes set to chase black-type honours.
Heading the market is defending champion Shenzhou Steeds ($4.40) who is set to face stiff competition from the likes of Zennista ($5.50) and Rothera.
In-form Kiwi mare High Kin is joined at $10 by Scone gelding Kaypers while Ipswich Cup winner Anagold is an upset chance at $21.
#4 Zennista $5.50
New Zealand mare who has been in strong form without winning in three Queensland starts this campaign. Has form around horses like Solzhenitsyn and Precedence but her last run is the key. Was beaten just over a length when third in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup behind quality stayers Moriarty and Quintessential and it’s a significant class drop here. Will handle the track if it is rain affected and gets the advantage of having top jockey Damian Browne in the saddle.
#5 Shenzhou Steeds $4.40
Won this race by seven lengths last year and simply loves the Sunshine Coast. Unbeaten in three starts at the track and can produce on all surfaces. Coming off runner-up finish in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup where he made up plenty of ground late.
#8 High Kin $10
Another Kiwi mare who looks well placed in this race. Having just her second start in Australia after running second in the Ipswich Cup where she made ground late and looked like she wanted more ground. Gets that here in a race that she has been specifically set for.
