Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Defending champ Shenzhou Steeds has opened narrow favourite to score successive victories in Saturday’s Caloundra Cup 2013 at the Sunshine Coast.
The Michael Moroney-trained gelding enjoyed a massive seven length success in last winter’s $200,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) when relishing a Heavy (10) track, and will be back for another shot at the title in 2013.
Twelve months ago they were the Ipswich Cup – Caloundra Cup double winner but didn’t contest the first leg of that this year.
Instead the Ishiguru five-year-old came via last Saturday’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm, and their close second when defeated just a long neck by Rialya there has the bookies confident of a win on Saturday.
As such Shenzhou Steeds, drawn in gate eight with Eddie Wilkinson to ride, has been installed at the top of the Caloundra Cup odds paying $4.40.
In the big capacity field of 18 starters and two emergencies just three other hopefuls are also under double figures with:
- #4 Zennista ($5.50) – Kiwi mare over in Queensland for the winter riches and loving it, three top four finishes from three starts in Group company in Brisbane most recently when third to Moriarty overcoming barrier 17 of 18 in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 8, gets a gun gate here in two, Damian Browne in the saddle and the form out of that race is cracker
- #2 Rothera ($6) – Brian Smith-trained Brisbanite was a good third at Eagle Farm just last Saturday in the Tattersall’s Cup, steps up to 2400m here which should suit and go well on a rain affected track so conditions in their favour too
- #1 Voila Ici ($8) – Peter Moody’s European import out to finally break their maiden status down under, came close in the Eagle Farm Cup two back but then was fifth in the Ipswich Cup from a bad gate (16) with a heavy weight (60kg), similar position here with 59.5kg and barrier 15 so expect a similar finish
Other Caloundra Cup hopefuls out to score an upset at juicer prices include another New Zealand-trained mare in High Kin ($10) last seen running just a long neck second in the Ipswich Cup, Scone-based galloper Kaypers ($10), Smerdon’s progressive European ex-pat Verdant ($17) and even the upset Ipswich Cup winner Anagold ($21).
Also at $21 is then Ipswich Cup third placed Za Magic ($21) before the rest of the field blow out to $26 (for second emergency Excellent Al) and over.
