Destiny’s Kiss Leads Winter Cup 2013 Odds

Despite never having raced in black type company before the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss has opened the short priced favourite to win Saturday’s 2013 Winter Cup at Rosehill Gardens.

Just 11 stayers are accepted for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m) which is set to run as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:05pm (AEST).

Of those it is Christian Reith’s mount Destiny’s Kiss topping the Winter Cup odds at a quote of $2.60.

The Power Of Destiny four-year-old has drawn nicely in barrier two and will carry 55.5kg as they vie for back-to-back wins in a 2000m handicap at the same track on June 15, Reith also aboard for that win.

While they will need to show obvious progression stepping up to stakes company for the Winter Cup, Destiny’s Kiss also has the task of running over the mile and a half for the first time on Saturday.

When under the preparation of former trainer Robert Smerdon Destiny’s Kiss raced competitively over 2000m but they are yet to see further than that, Pride believing they will handle it here as they progress onto the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 17 and then hopefully bigger things in the spring.

“If he runs well as I expect, the Grafton Cup is a race we will look at,” Pride said.

“He has a really good strike rate for a stayer and I’d like to see how far he can go in the spring.”

With a few things suggesting the favourite could be vulnerable there are then three other single figure fancies in the Winter Cup betting markets punters may want to look at with:

  • #4 Peal Of Bells ($4.60) – Everything’s been going spot on for Gwenda Markwell’s in-form five-year-old who is after their third on the trot, two back carried a hefty 61.5kg to a nice win in the wet at Warwick Farm over 2120m and then were outstanding over the two miles (3200m) to win the Stayers Cup by seven lengths at Randwick three weeks ago, will the 2400m be too sharp for them now but?
  • #2 Reuben Percival ($5.50) – Gai Waterhouse’s defending Winter Cup winner has had just one run (over 1400m) in the past four months so really needs to be firing second-up with a big step up in distance to be successful with 58.5kg from barrier 11
  • #1 Fiumicino ($8) – Rising 10-year-old Zabeel from the Hawkes’ stables, this veteran won the WJ McKell Cup over the mile and a half two back in the mud at Randwick by an impressive three lengths, something went amiss on firmer ground at Eagle farm however when they were 10th in the Brisbane Cup but should improve on that here

Other notable hopes at slightly longer odds then include the Tim Martin-trained mare Fibrillation ($10) backing up from a good fifth in last Saturday’s Tattersall’s Cup in Brisbane, and Piazza San Pietro ($11) before the rest of the field blow out to $20 and over.
