Peal Of Bells Heads 2013 Winter Cup Field

Gwenda Markwell’s potential Melbourne Cup starter Peal Of Bells will chase a third consecutive win when he lines up in the Listed $100,000 2013 Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The five-year-old gelding has been in career best form this preparation, showing a clear appreciation for a genuine staying trip when winning the Stayers Cup by seven lengths at Randwick earlier this month.

After that victory Markwell suggested the wet-track lover could potentially find his way into Australia’s biggest race, the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup.

“It would not surprise me to see this horse in a Melbourne Cup, if not this year then maybe next year,” Markwell said.

“You know he will stay a strong 3200m and if it happened to be wet on Cup Day, who knows?”

The son of Clangalang is the standout in an 11-horse field for Saturday’s Rosehill feature, with Destiny’s Kiss one of his key rivals.

Prepared at Warwick Farm by Joe Pride, Destiny’s Kiss has not finished worse than fourth in his last four starts and is coming off a one-length win in the Sydney Banana Wholesales Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill.

Dual Group 1 winner and $3 million stakes earner Fiumicino may be nine but the veteran showed he still has a zest for racing last month when winning the Listed McKell Cup (2400m) by three lengths. The team Hawkes-trained gelding is expected to appreciate a drop back in grade after finishing 10th in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup.

Also returning from a trip to Brisbane is Tim Martin’s grey mare Fibrillation who is set to back up seven days after finishing fifth in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm.
