Despite having been dually nominated across two states this weekend, the Greg Bennett-trained Kaypers has been confirmed as a definite acceptor for the Caloundra Cup 2013 at the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
Originally the Scone-based gelding was being considered for the $100,000 Listed ATC Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Bennett however has been tempted to try his luck in the sunshine state with Kaypers to run in the lucrative $200,000 Listed Yalumba Caloundra Cup (2400m) as the high class of Winter Cup nominees including Peal Of Bells, Destiny’s Kiss and Fiumicino looks imposing.
“I’m thinking the race at Caloundra, it may not stack up quite as strong as Sydney and it’s worth a bit more than the Winter Cup,” Bennett said.
Worth double the prize money of the NSW’s feature, the Caloundra Cup is also going to be a genuine test for the Cape Cross five-year-old however with some exciting entrants for this year’s race.
Some of the top-rated Caloundra Cup hopes include Peter Moody’s imported stayer Voila Ici, last year’s defending champ Shenzhou Steeds and last start Ipswich Cup winner Anagold.
There’s a strong chance they will also encounter a rain-affected track for their Caloundra Cup bid with the track currently a Slow (7) but more rain predicted to fall leading up to the weekend.
The wet is certainly going to play into Kaypers’ advantage too with the galloper boasting a terrific record on Heavy-rated ground.
From their five attempts in the mud they boast two wins as well as a brave second to Pelicano in the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) at Rosehill back in early March.
“He’s pretty versatile,” Bennett said.
“He’s won half his races on good to dead tracks and the other half on slow to heavy so it doesn’t really worry him.”
They are going to need all the advantages too if they are to break a lengthy winning drought, Kaypers not having won a race since August last year.
Their recent form has been encouraging according to Bennett however including their close third to Speediness in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) back in May when defeated just a half a length.
After that they were disappointing when ninth in a Benchmark 90 over the Randwick mile but improved just seen days later when backing up to finishing third to Winter Cup-bound Destiny’s Kiss over the 2000m at Rosehill.
On the 54kg minimum again on Saturday, meeting 59.5kg topweight Voila Ici 5.5kg better off, Kaypers will be ridden in the Caloundra Cup for the the first time by Paul Hammersley.
