Classy Sunshine Coast Guineas 2013 Field Revealed

This Saturday at the Sunshine Coast’s Caloundra Cup Day the three-year-olds will bring proceedings to a close with a bumper field of promising horses lining up in the 2013 Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Set to run as Race 9 at 4:15pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) has drawn a capacity field of 18 starters plus five emergencies.

Of the acceptors there are a couple of last start winners, most notably the Les Ross-trained Casino Card.

Drawn well in gate six with Joe Bowditch to ride, the progressive Casino Prince filly has won four of her last five starts with her only disappointing effort being a 10th to Academus when she travelled to the Gold Coast last month for the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

An easy winner in a Class 4 at this track over 1400m in the mud two back, Casino Card was last seen beating a number of the same rivals she faces again on Saturday in the Schweppes T.L. Cooney Handicap (1350m) at Ipswich on June 15.

The three horses that finished second, third and fourth respectively behind Casino Card in the Ipswich race two weeks back have also all been accepted for the Sunshine Coast Guineas this weekend with Luke’s Luck, Bingo Bobby and General Groove.

The Kelly Schweida-trained Luke’s Luck has suffered an early blow for the Guineas coming up with a wide barrier 14 draw, Glen Colless to ride, with the Show A Heart gelding after their first win since the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in April last year when prepared by Trevor Andrews in WA.

They were one of the most promising of their age getting around in WA too but have failed to find that same form since being transferred to Schweida in Queensland.

Bingo Bobby was a winner at Grafton in late May before their Cooney Handicap third, Sharon Pepper’s Snippetson gelding suited to a Slow track which they are likely to get on Saturday.

General Groove then came up trumps in the Sunshine Coast Guineas barrier draw with the inside alley, the Leon Corstens-trained Victorian raider being stepped up to black type company for the first time.

The other notable interstate visitors looking to steal the show from the locals in the Guineas meanwhile include the Mick Price-trained Eximius out wide in 19 who was last seen finishing a close second in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 8, and Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel gelding Dances On Stars.

A close second behind Sizzling in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) on June 1 form a wide gate, Dances On Stars is looking to bounce back after beating home just two rivals when 16 lengths away 13th to Conservatorium in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich a fortnight ago.

Also in the mix are the likes of the David Kelly-trained Lucky Hussler who was third in both the Queensland Guineas and Daybreak Lover, local mudlark Buakaw drawn nicely in gate two, the progressive Liam Birchley-trained Hard Ticker who has run top two in six of their seven career starts to date, and Natalie McCall’s track specialist Lady Echelon.

The complete 2013 Sunshine Coast Guineas field, barriers, jockeys and weights are listed below.
