2013 Tattersall’s Tiara Winner Red Tracer Breaks Group 1 Maiden

The most deserving horse in the Tattersall’s Tiara 2013 field finally broke her Group 1 duck with ace Sydney trainer Chris Waller capping off a superb season with Red Tracer winning the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival classic.

Dane Shadow five-year-old Red Tracer lined up in her 10th Group 1 assignment in the $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm today jumping as one of the top fancies in a classy edition of the fillies-and-mares’ feature.

After a number of close calls at the highest level throughout the autumn Tattersall’s Tiara Day was finally Red Tracer’s time to shine as she handed Waller, the most capped Group 1 winning horseman for the 2012-13 racing season, with his ninth elite level trophy for the year.

“It’s been a good overall effort,” Waller said of his eight individual Group 1 winners, Shoot Out the only one to score a double.

“Just an amazing season and will be good to look back at it.”

Coming off an impressive effort at the same track and distance when first-up winner of the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, Red Tracer was again ridden by Nash Rawiller in the Tatt’s Tiara.

And like the Dane Ripper where the duo jumped from barrier 16 of 18 they had to do it the hard way with another horror barrier drawing the ‘visitor’s gate’ in the field of 16.

While she didn’t get a great run finding herself settled fifth a little deep, class prevailed in the end and Red Tracer stormed home once she got into the clear on the straight.

She went straight up through the middle while others such as Yosei and Streama, who’d been caught midfield, tried to take shortcuts near the inside.

With 100m left to travel however the Tattersall’s Tiara result was never in doubt with Red Tracer flying home to put a few lengths between herself and the Guy Walter-trained runner-up Streama who came off a third in the Stradbroke Handicap.

A flying Floria was in a photo with Streama for the minor placings eventually awarded third, another nice Queensland Winter Racing Carnival result for Peter Moody’s Dane Ripper Stakes runner-up.

But they had nothing on the winner who Rawiller described as a bulldog.

“She had her game face on,” Rawiller said post-win.

“Very satisfying, she’s a lovely mare.

“She’s only little and just such a bulldog, just so wrapped she could win today.

“I’ve never rode a more deserving horse.”

Waller agreed that Red Tracer was certainly very worthy of winning at the top level and didn’t think there would be anyone in the stands that would argue against the fact.

“She’s been around the mark in some very good Group 1 races throughout her career,” he said.

“She’s a very good horse…no horse is more deserving than her.

“It’s been perfect the only blotch was the Doncaster but she never got into the race that day.

“She freshened up well, her win the other day was good, she’s just a class horse.

“It helps when the horses are set for the race.

“This will be a springboard into better things in the spring.”

Waller was also represented in the Tattersall’s Tiara by his recent June Stakes winner in Sydney She’s Clean who had a lovely run but just didn’t finish off as well as some of her rivals.

“She’s clean had a beautiful run and I saw Red Tracer was out a bit wider,” he said.

“Class prevailed and I’m sure she’ll (She’s Clean will) get her chance next time.”
