Chris Waller’s always honest mare Red Tracer has firmed into the top fancy to win today’s Tattersall’s Tiara 2013 in Brisbane, the five-year-old after a much deserved maiden Group 1 trophy in the Eagle Farm feature.
A high earning daughter of Dane Shadow, Red Tracer came oh so close to breaking her Group 1 duck during the autumn with two seconds behind Appearance beaten only a short half head and a half-length respectively by Guy Walter’s class mare in the Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the 1500m at Rosehill.
After being found out form a horror gate in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) finishing nearly nine lengths away 15th to new stablemate Sacred Falls, Red Tracer bounced back in Brisbane after a let-up.
Returning 49 days after the Doncaster she was again hit with a wide gate (16 of 18) but overcame the barrier to beat home Floria in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
She returns to the track and distance today for the big one in Brisbane, the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) and is well fancied to make it back-to-back victories.
After opening as the $4.80 second fancy in the Tattersall’s Tiara odds earlier in the week Red Tracer has been well backed into $4.60 favouritism after the Friday rain in the ‘sunshine’ state.
This morning Eagle Farm was rated a Heavy (8) and known mudlark Red Tracer boasts five wins from six starts on Heavy ground improving her chances today.
The second line of Tattersall’s Tiara betting is then occupied by the Guy Walter-trained dual Group 1 winner Streama out from $4.20 to $5.
The Stratum four-year-old certainly has plenty of class as evidenced by her eye-catching second to Linton in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) here two weeks ago.
She is also no flop on a Heavy track with a win and two minor placings from four goes on that ground so cannot be discounted here.
Also at single figures and firming along with Red Tracer are then Walter’s last start Emancipation Stakes winner Skyerush ($9 into $8) after her third on the trot and the John Thompson-trained Peron ($8 into $7) in gate 13.
Thompson prepared last year’s Tattersall’s Tiara winner Pear Tart who won her fourth straight in the Group 1 classic, young Husson filly Perron after the same coming off three consecutive wins including the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) on a Slow Ipswich track just seven days ago.
There’s also been a tickle for the 2011 Tattersall’s Tiara champion Yosei ($16 into $12) after her first win in two years.
Other market drifters along with former favourite Streama are then Steps In Time ($9 out to $12) who the punters are shying away from as they have zero form in the wet and Anthony Cummings’ Dark Jewel Classic winner Arctic Flight ($17 out to $26) who was a nice third in the Dane Ripper.
The biggest Tattersall’s Tiara market mover meanwhile has been Waller’s other hopeful She’s Clean ($12 into $9) who steps up in class today.
The Redoute’s Choice four-year-old has won both starts this time in in Sydney most recently taking out the Listed June Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on June 8 where she overcame barrier 13 of 13.
She’s Clean comes into gate four today with Jason Collett retaining the ride and with some decent form on Slow (6-3-0-2) and Heavy (2-1-0-0) going she’s looking more and more like a genuine challenger.
