Kelso Wood’s locally-trained four-year-old Someday has opened top of the odds to take out the 2013 Open Mile at Eagle Farm’s Tattersall’s Tiara Day this Saturday following a nice last start effort at the same track and distance two weeks back.
The Falvelon gelding continued their rise through the ranks this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival when finishing under a half-length away second to Tokamak in the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap (1600m) on June 8 which was both their first stakes assignment and first look at the mile.
Someday gets the chance to improve on that again this weekend when they run in another black type assignment, the $100,000 Listed Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Open Mile (1600m).
Drawn in gate nine of 14 for the feature Someday will be ridden by Michael Cahill on the 54kg minimum meaning they meet last Saturday’s Eye Liner Stakes winner Conservatorium 6.5kg better in the weights.
Their promising form and nice weight combine to see Someday heading the early Open Mile betting markets at a quote of $3.70.
There are then three other single-figure fancies with:
- #3 Fire Up Fifi ($4.20) – Rob Heathcote-trained Bradbury’s Luck mare has a really nice record with 10 wins and 7 places from 28 starts, looking good this season too with promising form in similar (and better) races including her Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) win over Tokamak and her close fourth to Tattersall’s Tiara second favourite Red Tracer in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) last start
- #1 Conservatorium ($5.50) – Gary Kennewell-trained Adelaide raider has Group 1 form (2nd in The Goodwood three back), was just nudged out of the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) win at the start of the month by Galah after jumping from barrier 14 of 14 before burning their rivals at Ipswich last Saturday to win the Eye Liner Stakes carrying 59kg, on a short back up and do they have the class to carry 60.5kg to victory here?
- #9 Soft Sand ($9.50) – Four-year-old Dansili mare prepared in Scone by Paul Messara, has been racing well below her best since joining her new trainer following a transfer from the care of Colin Little who had her in top form last spring including her second to Appearance in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), can improve on Dane Ripper ninth but enough to feature here?
Other chances at more lucrative prices worth a look in for an upset or exotic selections then include Barry Lockwood’s Strawberry Road Handicap winner Tokamak ($10), the Chris Waller-trained Sydney visitor Thumbtacks ($13) and even Kiwi mare Diademe ($17) who has Group 1 form in NZ and has been right up there in her Aussie campaign this winter including a last start fourth in the Strawberry Road.
