Streama Heads 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara Field

Guy Walter’s dual Group 1 winning mare Streama, backing up from an eye-catching third in the Stradbroke Handicap, heads a smart field of 16 fillies and mares accepted to face off in the Tattersall’s Tiara 2013 at Eagle Farm this Saturday.

Rounding out elite level racing for the current season the $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) is set to run as Eagle Farm Race 7 at 3:40pm (AEST) and is shaping up as a top class affair.

To wear the number one saddlecloth is Walter’s classy Stratum four-year-old Streama who is out to become at triple Group 1 winner following her victories in the Flight Stakes (2011) and Australian Oaks (2012) as a three-year-old.

Streama was a luckless third behind Linton and Buffering last start in the iconic Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap over the same track (Eagle Farm) and distance (1400m) when hampered by her wide barrier 11 draw.

Walter was praying for a good gate for her run this weekend and those prayers were answered with Streama to get the inside run from barrier one in the Tiara with Hugh Bowman engaged for the ride.

Also representing Walter in the final field field is his Super Jet seven-year-old Skyerush who didn’t have quite as much luck in the Tattersall’s Tiara barrier draw coming up with gate 12 for jockey Blake Shinn to overcome.

Skyerush was a close second behind the John Thompson-trained Pear Tart in the Tattersall’s Tiara last Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and will be out to atone this year as she comes off a successful title defense in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Sydney Cup Day, April 27.

Thompson meanwhile will get his chance to shoot for back-to-back Tattersall’s Tiara trophies after his flying young filly Peron secured a start.

Originally she was 23rd on the ballot of the 29 nominees but the high attrition rate means the Husson three-year-old will line-up as the 16th starter from gate 13 with Michael Cahill to retain the ride.

Cahill has been aboard the progressive Peron for all but one of her seven starts to date which have produced six victories including her past three on the trot.

Peron is sure to start towards the top of the Tattersall’s Tiara odds too despite her inexperience after she impressed in her black type debut last Saturday winning the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) by two lengths at Ipswich.

It won’t be an easy feat to get the better of this talented field however with a whole host of Group 1 performers out for the tropy.

The second highest rated mare in the mix is Stuart Webb’s triple Group 1 winner Yosei who won the 2011 Tattersall’s Tiara but who has been unable to win again since.

Sydney’s ace trainer and the season’s top Group 1 winning horseman with eight trophies and the Tiara on the horizon Chris Waller will then be out in force with two runners.

His last start Dane Ripper Stakes winner Red Tracer has work to do from the outside barrier (16) however as she looks to secure her maiden Group 1 trophy following a couple of close calls behind Appearance in the autumn.

Waller’s other runner is then the better-drawn She’s Clean (barrier four) with Jason Collett to ride the super consistent Redoute’s Choice four-year-old after her fourth consecutive victory.

She’s Clean was last seen winning the Listed June Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on June 8 from barrier 13 of 13 and while she is yet to race outside of Sydney her favourable barrier for the Tiara is sure to be a confidence booster.

Other notable chances then include Les Kelly’s Gai Waterhouse Classic runner-up Skating On Ice, the Anthony Cummings-trained Arctic Flight who won the Listed Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone two back before her close third from a wide gate behind Red Tracer in the Dane Ripper, and runner-up in the Dane Ripper Floria from the Melbourne stables of Peter Moody.
