Conservatorium Steps up to 1600m at Eagle Farm – 2013 Open Mile Field

Adelaide trainer Gary Kennewell will give in-form galloper Conservatorium a 1600m test at Eagle Farm this Saturday with a view to chasing Group 1 success in Perth later this year.

Kennewell had also entered the five-year-old for the 1200m Healy Stakes but will use Saturday’s hit-out in the Centenary Classic Mercedes-Benz Open Mile┬áto determine whether November’s Railway Stakes (1600m) is a suitable target.

The furthest trip Conservatorium has tackled so far is 1400m, producing back-to-back minor placings over the distance at Morphetville in December.

By Royal Academy from Belong to Madam, the progressive horse is in career-best form heading into this weekend. On Saturday he was a convincing two-length winner in the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich which came on the back of runner-up results in the Group 2 QTC Cup and the Group 1 Goodwood.

The South Australian raider will have to overcome some in-form local performers if he is to make it two victories in two weeks this Saturday.

Robert Heathcote’s grey mare Fire Up Fifi is expected to appreciate a drop back in class after running on for a strong fourth in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes. Prior to that the daughter of Bradbury’s Luck won the Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Also representing the local charge is Bary Lockwood-trained gelding Tokamak who held off the fast-finishing Someday to win the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap on June 8. From his past nine starts the five-year-old has won five times and hasn’t finished worse than fourth.

Someday will be out to turn the tables this weekend when he steps out for Kelso Wood and Michael Cahill in barrier nine.
