Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
While not holding black type status there’s still plenty of hype about for Sunday’s Murwillumbah Cup 2013 in the New South Wales’ hinterland with nominations for the Tweed River Jockey Club’s premier race now out.
It’s likely to be a wet track for Murwillumbah Cup Day with the course currently in the Heavy range but that hasn’t stopped the nominees.
There were a bumper 20 early entries taken for this year’s $33,000 Murwillumbah Cup (2020m) including seven last start winners and the defending champ Castlemagne King.
Basil Ryan’s Coffs Harbour galloper Castlemagne King won the Murwillumbah Cup 12 months ago off the back of some good runs at Grafton, the now seven-year-olds’ only win since being their impressive three and a half length effort over 1900m at Kempsey three starts back in early May.
One horse in absolutely flying form looking to extend an impressive winning streak with a Murwillumbah Cup win is the Owen Glue-trained Handsome Dane shooting for their fourth on the trot.
The Great Dane gelding enjoyed back-to-back Grafton victories over 2110m and 2370m in May before taking that form to Ipswich for Ipswich Cup Day last Saturday where they beat a decent field in the Provincial Cup (2150m) on a Slow (7) track with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle.
Other notable last start winners in the mix then include the Bryan Guy-trained Gold Coast galloper Dienekes, known mudlark Horoscopes and Matthew Dunn’s local mare Dual Chamber coming off a win over the mile at the Sunshine Coast.
Show A Heart six-year-old Dual Chamber is also the top rated Murwillumbah Cup nominee, the former Queensland-trained mare with winning form in the mud and plenty of stakes racing experience including two black type victories.
Dunn has also nominated for four-year-old In Taipei who was a last start winner over 2200m at the Gold Coast.
Other highly-rated entries include Commands five-year-old Rhetoric, the Bruce Hill-trained duo of Buffett and Bilt Leica and Zariz three-year-old Zar Zar Binks coming off a second at Warwick Farm.
The Bindi Cheers-trained Zar Zar Binks could be in for a massive week having also been accepted to run at Canterbury today as one of only seven horses left in contention for the $35,000 tab.com.au Handicap (1900m).
“I don’t think he’s a real dead-set stayer but he helps me keep paying the bills,” Cheers said of Zar Zar Binks who has winning form up to 2100m.
The 2013 Murwillumbah Cup final field and barriers are due for release later in the week so make sure you keep an eye out for this great Sunday punting opportunity.
