2013 Cox Plate Target for Commanding Jewel

While yet to have even her first-up assignment penciled in, Leon Corstens’ Thousand Guineas winning filly Commanding Jewel is said to be targeting the Cox Plate 2013 this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival when she returns from an injury enforced spell.

The rising four-year-old daughter of Commands was a revolution for the Kyneton-based Corstens last year.

She hit the headlines when winning three of her opening five career starts including her blistering three length success over subsequent Crown Oaks winner Dear Demi in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in late October.

That turned out to be her last run to date however after the star suffered a season ending front joint injury during her work preparing for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

After a successful operation Commanding Jewel has been progressing well and is back in light work gearing up for her spring comeback.

“She’s now doing light work. She looks really good as she’s put on a quite a bit of condition,” Corstens said.

“We got the injury cleaned up and gave her a rest. She’s come back in good order.”

Corstens is looking at an early spring return for the $400,000 earner with the main aim likely to be the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

“Early spring is a real possibility but I will be guided by the track conditions,” he said.

In the futures Cox Plate betting markets Commanding Jewel is listed at $26, an equal price with the likes of Group 1 winning European raider Al Kazeem, the Chris Waller-trained Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent and their Doncaster Mile winning stablemate Sacred Falls.

The pre-nomination Cox Plate odds meanwhile are led by It’s A Dundeel ($4.20) who became a four time Group 1 winner down under with their recent Australian Cup success.
