City Gallopers Head North – 2013 Rockhampton Cup nominations

With prizemoney the equivalent of many Listed races, plenty of southern Queensland trainers will head north on Saturday for the $100,000 2013 Rockhampton Cup (1600m).

Twenty seven horses have been entered to fill the 16 available spots in the beef capital’s biggest race including regular black-type competitor Poste Restante.

The Desleigh Forster-trained mare hasn’t been at her best this preparation but won four of six city starts during a summer campaign and finished third to Brambles in the 2012 Rough Habit Plate.

One entrant with stakes success to their name is Liam Birchley’s recent stable addition Dozintmateranyway who won two Listed races in New Zealand before being transferred to Birchley at Eagle Farm.

The six-year-old will appreciate a drop back in class after finishing 11th in the Group 2 QTC Cup on Australian debut earlier this month.

Others potentially making the trip from the south east include Kelly Schweida-trained gelding What Happenedhenry, last-start Sunshine Coast winner Solebid, dual Listed winner Bid Spotter and Lawrie Mayfield-Smith’s seven-year-old Danagaze.

Heading the local charge is David Stafford-trained gelding Writer who is the defending champion in the race.

The seven-year-old was one of the stars of North Queensland last winter, having also won the Townsville Cup and finished fourth in the Mackay Cup.

Now based in Rockhampton and set to have his second crack at the race after finishing third last year is veteran gelding Prussian Secret.

But last year’s Mackay Cup winner will have to show a sharp form turnaround, finishing a well-beaten seventh in his only start for new trainer Jared Whelow.
