2013 Ipswich Cup Results – Anagold an Upset Winner

In a result that almost nobody saw coming, Gold Coast mare Anagold overcame a long-shot price and uninspiring lead-up form to produce a surprise win in the $200,000 2013 Ipswich Cup (2150m) today.

Paying $53.10 at race jump, the four-year-old was the beneficiary of a rails-hugging ride from Tony Pattillo who was happy to be patient at the back of the field.

Approaching the turn into the short Ipswich straight, Anagold was in second last position before a saloon passage presented itself down the inside.

When Pattillo called upon the Bryan Guy-trained stayer she duly responded and zipped along the fence to assume the lead and hold on from New Zealand mare High Kin and gritty stayer Za Magic.

While the win came as a surprise to punters, Guy said it was the pleasing result of a long range plan to target the race.

“This is the race we’ve been setting her for, and I said to them [the owners] we’ll be ready and we’ll be spot on for the Ipswich Cup,” Guy said.

Pattillo admitted to getting a fortunate run down the inside but was elated to claim his second Cup victory, having last won the race in 2005 aboard Forest Jim.

“The heaven’s opened, you know, you get the luck,” Pattillo said.

“It wasn’t a pipe dream, we were a good chance in the race and we won it. I’ll go home happy, it’s been a long time coming.”

The win was the first black-type success for Anagold and took her record to six wins from 27 starts and her prize pool to more than $245,000.

The Ipswich Cup may be over for another year but Queensland’s winter carnival action continues next weekend for Tatt’s Tiara day.
