Queensland trainer Kelso Wood may have missed out despite having three runner’s in last weekend’s Stradbroke Handicap but he can still pick up a winter Group 1 in next weekend’s 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) with Spirit Song.
The five-year-old, who has had just two starts for Wood, battled on gamely for ninth in the Stradbroke despite receiving no luck in running.
Wood confirmed on Queensland’s Radio TAB this morning the consistent galloper will contest the fillies and mares’ feature and has booked Victorian jockey Brad Rawiller to ride.
Rawiller had a strong association with Spirit Song when she was prepared by Warrnambool trainer Aaron Purcell.
Yet to record success for her new trainer, the daughter of Invincible Spirit has won eight of 31 starts including back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Wood said stable star Sizzling, who is in the paddock after finishing seventh in the Stradbroke, will be aimed at the Cox Plate in the spring. The former two-year-old stand-out will also contest the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick.
A Group 1 winner at two, the Snitzel colt’s major winter highlight this year was a barnstorming win in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.
Sizzling will be making his second trip to Melbourne after finishing midfield in two starts last spring.
Wood resisted the urge of a title defence in Saturday’s Eye Liner Stakes with consistent sprinter Belltone but will be hoping he can claim a second straight Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast later this month.
