Ipswich Cup 2013 Form Guide & Betting Preview

Following last weekend’s big Stradbroke Handicap Day race meet this Saturday the Queensland Winter Racing Action continues west of Brisbane with the Ipswich Cup 2013 spearheading proceedings, the Races.com.au team’s insider form guide analysis and betting preview for which can be found right here.

Due to jump as Ipswich Race 7 at 3:05pm (AEST) this year’s $200,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m) has already had its first scratching with the withdrawal of Tony Gollan’s Toowoomba Cup winner Bang On, the mare accepted for but never a sure starter.

Ipswich Cup betting meanwhile is still dominated by Peter Moody’s grey Italian import Voila Ici who is after their first victory down under after a close third to Quintessential last start in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup.

They have drifted out slightly in the markets however from $3.50 to $3.60 and there are a few niggling things working against them like the 60kg topweight and, with the withdrawal of Bang On, the widest gate in the big field.

There’s now just one other single figure fancy too in last start Eagle Farm winner Planetarium ($7.50) getting in on the 54kg minimum with the inside alley, which may or may not work in their favour on the Ipswich circuit.

Other notable hopes in the markets include High Kin ($10) from NZ, last start runner-up to Planetarium Za Magic ($10), veteran nine-year-old Group 1 performer Ginga Dude ($12) and Bang On’s stablemate Topping ($12) looking to improve on their Toowoomba Cup fourth.

But are these ones the really the horses to beat in the Ipswich Cup 2013? Or is there an upset result on the cards for the Queensland punters?

Last year’s Ipswich Cup winner was the Michael Moroney-trained Shenzhou Steeds who came off an unplaced run at Caulfield, jumped from barrier one (of 10) and was ridden by Eddie Wilkinson carrying the 54kg minimum

This year Moroney and Wilkinson get a shot at back-to-back victories with #8 Muirfield ($14) who is allocated 54kg and barrier nine
Last year’s winning barrier (1) belongs on Saturday to #14 Planetarium ($7.50)
With #6 Bang On scratched #14 Planetarium is also the only last start winner in the field
The highest Win Rate then belongs to the $3.60 favourite #1 Voila Ici (35.14%) followed by #13 Master Avatar (33.33%), #7 High Kin (28.57%) and #12 Secret Garden (27.27%)
#13 Master Avatar ($15) then boasts the best Place Rate with 72.22% followed by #1 Voila Ici (67.57%), #15 Dazzle Us (54.17%) and #5 Topping (52.17%)
The only horses with previous winning form at Ipswich are #9 Warrior Within (9-2-0-2), #12 Secret Garden (3-1-0-0), #16 Anagold (4-2-0-0) and second emergency #18e Tuskegee Hawk (3-1-0-1)
Over the distance horses with the best form are then #1 Voila Ici (7-4-0-2), #7 High Kin (4-2-1-0), #11 Za Magic (8-2-0-1), #2 Ginga Dude (9-2-1-2), #12 Secret Garden (2-1-1-0), #15 Dazzle Us (6-2-1-0) and #16 Anagold (5-3-0-1)
Lightweights traditionally fair better in the Ipswich Cup with only three horses since 1983 carrying 55kg or more to victory; this year there are only four in the field with 55kg or more with #1 Voila Ici (60kg), #2 Ginga Dude (58.5kg), #3 Zabeelionaire (57kg) and #4 Rialya (55kg)
