2013 Ipswich Cup Tips & Exotic Selections

The always popular Ipswich Cup 2013 is set to light up Ipswich Racecourse this weekend and to help you pick the winner out of the exciting field of stayers below are the exclusive Races.com.au betting tips on the winter showdown.

This year’s field for the $200,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m) has had three early scratchings with #3 Zabeelionaire, #6 Bang On and #9 Warrior Within.

Their withdrawal from the field and markets means three of the four Ipswich Cup emergencies come into the starting line-up with #17 I Gotta Feeling ($51), #18 Tuskegee Hawk ($101) and #19 Dodging Eddie ($26) who was second to stablemate Bang On in the Toowoomba Cup last start all now in contention.

Betting on the race meanwhile is led by the Peter Moody-trained former European Group 1 champ Voila Ici ($3.50) and Gerald Ryan’s Sydney raider Planetarium ($7).

There are pros and cons for backing both of these horses.

Veteran Voila Ici hasn’t won in Australia, has a wide draw and big weight (60kg) but comes off a nice Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup third.

Planetarium meanwhile is in for a major class rise but has just 54kg, gate one and a last start Brisbane win behind them.

Having firmed back into $9 visiting New Zealand mare High Kin who is a specialist at the distance is the only other single figure fancy at this stage in Ipswich Cup betting.

With plenty of other talent at longer Ipswich Cup odds including the Brian Smith-trained Za Magic ($10), and even Muirfield ($14) looking to hand their trainer Michael Moroney and jockey Eddie Wilkinson with back-to-back victories after the success of Shenzhou Steeds 12 months ago there could be some real value bets here.

Earlier we published an insider 2013 Ipswich Cup Form Guide & Betting Preview and based on the facts and stats we uncovered there below are our top four tips for Queensland’s premier race this weekend.

To Win

#14 Planetarium ($7)

Second favourite in the markets but think they have what it takes to secure their first black type here. Drawn in gate one which despite what some say about inside alleys at Ipswich produced last year’s winner and gives Ryan’s Fusaichi Pegasus five-year-old the chance to do the same. Distance will suit third-up off an Eagle Farm win over 1818m a fortnight ago where they had the same barrier (1), jockey (Brenton Avdulla) and weight (54kg). Only last start winner in the field and expecting them to go back-to-back handling their maiden black type assignment.

Second

#12 Secret Garden ($12)

Adds value to the winning Ipswich Cup Quinella. Talented Toowoomba-based mare on the way up. Loves a soft track but also handles firmer ground, winner over the 2100m at Doomben over Count Encosta in March. Comes off a fourth to Planetarium and has chance to improve on that despite a wide draw. One of the best win rates (27.27)%), is one of only four previous winners at the track and distance is a non-issue too.

Third

#1 Voila Ici ($3.50)

Is the rank horse in this field and deserved favourite but just think a few things work against them for the win here including the extreme outside barrier and 60kg topweight. Hasn’t won in Australia yet but came close at Eagle Farm last start. Group 1 winner in Italy and Group 1 form down under last season. If they are near their Underwood Stakes (3rd) could surprise us even with the weight but think they will be better in the spring.

Roughie We Like

#13 Master Avatar ($15)

Nice price on this progressive Elvstroem four-year-old prepared on the Sunshine Coast by Gary Duncan. Willing to forgive their very distant 13th when 18 lengths off the winner in the Toowoomba Cup where they didn’t handle the all weather track. Lookin instead to their other runs this time in including a home win on May 22 over 1800m. Second best Win rate (33.33%) and highest Place Rate (72.22%) so when conditions right can really perform. At this level? Only time will tell.
